Buckley Kicks The Bucket

February 27, 2008

I have already seen a few more than a few progressive bloggers being nice to Buckley because he just died, saying shit like, “He was such a brilliant man, and his ideas kinda decent. It was just that his political heirs twisted everything around and ruined it”. This is a total fucking load of horseshit.

Conservatism as a political ideology is both pragmatically inconsistent with the reality of human nature and morally bankrupt, and was thus preordained, regardless of details of political implementation, to ultimately result in the hideous large-scale megaclusterfuck we now find ourselves embroiled in.

Someone as supposedly brilliant as Buckley should be considered even more culpable than all of his supposedly less-brilliant heirs for espousing a morally decrepit and pragmatically batshit insane conservative ideology, precisely because he should have seen more clearly than his followers where this ideology would lead.

UPDATE: Driftglass and Glenn Greenwald have slightly different takes than me, and there is very good discussion of this topic at their joints.

  1. Yeah, some folks are more decent than I am, then again, I still don’t care for McCarthy. You don’t see me gettin all misty eyed on the anniversary of his death, you can pretty much figure that Buckley will be treated similarly.
He kept pretty fucking quiet there for a long time. I’m thinking he probably recognized a freak show when he saw it, especially when it was his freak show grown mad with unchecked power.

Fuck that cocksucker. As soon as the Hagiograph stops churning out runny, stinking shit about how fucking great he was, I intend to piss on his grave.

    Agreed.
But my guess is that he never imagined that so many fortunate sperm who develop into such shiftless dumbass wastrels could ascend to such power and rape the land. And when he did, Bustedknuckles so aptly put it, “He kept pretty fucking quiet there for a long time. I’m thinking he probably recognized a freak show when he saw it….”
That doesn’t merit Buckley exoneration though. But that is why I think driftglass’ post was spot-on perfect—it was, appropriately, a freakin tragedy when all was said and done.

    good fucking riddance, I said.

  5. Fixer Says:

Indeed. It reminds me of the Communists who’d say Marxism in it’s pure form is the perfect ideology. Problem is, with all of these failed lines of thought, none of them in their “purest form” ever take the ‘human factor’ into account. None of them even consider the baser instincts of greed and self-importance would come into play. They failed because human nature is far stronger than any ideology.
