PalMD: Sanjay Gupta As Surgeon General
January 9, 2009
I must say that despite your eloquent protestations to the contrary, Sanjay Gupta is a brilliant choice for Surgeon General. One cannot expect ideologic purity from a political appointment, even one as critical as the chief public health officer. While he may, in fact, be “teh suxxorz”, he is an excellent communicator, and one of the few physicians in the public eye who has not yet succumbed to Oprahfication. His transgressions so far are mere pecadillos (what journalist could say “no” to alien clones, after all!).
While Gupta currently has the CNN Overlords to please, I think he has done reasonably well keeping his discourse on an intelligent level. If and when he exchanges his current overlords for a new one (“meet the old boss, same as the new boss” I think you might say), we will be better able to guage how he approaches public health—from a science-based perspective, an ideologic perspective, or a marketing perspective.
“But”, you would rightly object, “how will we be able to pre-judge his performance if we must see his performance to judge it?” In this, we must look at the choices made to date by the President-Elect. He has shown himself, with few exceptions, to be quite savvy. And based on my observations, and mine alone, I think that, freed from the market forces of CNN, Sanjay will approach public health with a strong science-based perspective.
Or perhaps I’m really fucking deluded.
Vive la revolution,
